SuperMeat: A Potential Solution to An Age Old Problem

SuperMeat is looking to innovate the meat industry by producing meat without harming animals.

All around the world, animals are confined, fattened, genetically modified and are slaughtered for meat. Current practices of obtaining meat also contribute to global warming, damage the environment. Further still, the gap between human population and the resources that are needed to sustain the population, like food, is growing, prompting a need for finding alternative methods of obtaining sustenance and nutrients.

SuperMeat’s concept is derived from tissue engineering techniques from regenerative medicine and revolves around the idea of cultured meat. It is implemented in several, relatively simple steps.

First, a small tissue sample can be taken from an animal. This process will not harm the animal and lead to a culture of a significant number of cells. These cells are then grown in a nutrient soup, mimicking the conditions they would undergo normally in the animal. The cells will begin to form miniscule tissue that eventually grows into animal meat.

The process, under supervised conditions, ends up being healthier and easier than normal production techniques, which require animal supervision, feeding, etc. Furthermore, the mass production of meat in this form would be cheaper than conventional methods, even allowing for grocery stores and consumers themselves to grow their own meat.
